Are you finding it difficult to make it through the day without having to frequently stop for those unplanned restroom trips? You may be dealing with something known as fibroids, which are a type of non-cancerous growth that affects many women in their late thirties to fifty year range. Many people think that frequent urination is something that is a common problem that happens when you become older, but uterine fibroids are one of the major causes of frequent urination for women.

Uterine Fibroids and Bladder Problems

The bladder is an organ that stores urine and it helps to control the release of waste from the body. It does this by contracting and relaxing its muscular walls, allowing urine to pass out when it’s ready to be released. When fibroids are present in the uterus, they can press on and irritate the bladder. This can lead to frequent urination, as well as a feeling of urgency or having to go even when the bladder isn’t full. Fibroids can also block the flow of urine out of the body, leading to discomfort and pain associated with urinary tract infections. In some cases, if left untreated, complications like kidney failure can arise.

Uterine fibroids can cause bladder problems due to the pressure they place on the surrounding organs. If a fibroid is large enough, it may press directly against the bladder or block the flow of urine. This can lead to frequent urination and/or an inability to completely empty the bladder, which can be very uncomfortable. Additionally, the presence of fibroids can cause an increase in urinary tract infections due to difficulty emptying the bladder completely. The risk for infection increases with the size of the fibroid(s).

What are Fibroids and Types of Fibroids?

There are three main types of fibroids: submucosal fibroids, intramural fibroids, and subserous fibroids. Submucosal fibroids grow just below the inner lining of the uterus, and these are typically associated with heavy bleeding. Intramural fibroids are located within the wall of the uterus and can cause pelvic pain or increased pressure on surrounding organs. Lastly, subserous fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus and may press on other organs like the bladder, causing frequent urination.

What Are Some of The Bladder Problems Associated With Fibroids?

• Feeling the need to urinate more often than normal

• Difficulty in fully emptying the bladder

• A feeling of pressure or cramping when urinating

• Pain during intercourse due to fibroid-related pelvic pressure

• A sensation of having to go even when the bladder is empty

• Leaking urine during activity or when coughing or sneezing

What Type of Treatment is Available For Pressure on the Bladder?

Frequent urination can be caused by a number of factors, including but not limited to: illnesses like diabetes or urinary tract infections, medications, lifestyle changes such as increased fluid intake, and pressure on the bladder due to fibroids pressing on the bladder.
